One of my favorite sneakers I’ve never even tried on, the Asics Gel Lyte III ‘Super Green’. Charcoal grey upper, laced in lime green, two tone…. Lord be with me. If I ever copped these I probably would find a way to wear them for 2 weeks straight.
Regardless, this sneaker has some humble beginnings. It’s first release 3 years ago was limited to only 300 pairs. And you couldn’t get a pair unless you lived in Haiti, as it was only sold to raise money for earthquake victims within the country. Cool enough, it made the sneakers’ value shoot up on the resale market (eBay).
Ronnie Fieg, The infamous designer behind this sneaker’s creation, has gone back and forth with his homies over at Kith, his very own clothing brand that hails in both Manhattan and Brooklyn locations respectively, to re-release this sneaker. As Ronnie has said in previous interviews, he really doesn’t like to feed into the “hype” and do what is expected, but the timing of this release is what led to his decision.
It’s been 10 years since his first collaboration with Asics, so along came a 10th year anniversary pair of kicks. The Asics Gel Lyte 3.1. His first fusion sneaker, not my cup of tea but either way they’re both coming Saturday, May 21st.
As much as I want the Super Green, unfortunately I won’t be copping this Saturday, the shoe will be exclusively released at both Kith locations in New York only. Oh well, good luck to anyone standing out in that New York summer heat! Peace.
